Tiger Is Out of the Open, Steve Williams Is In

by Jeff Skinner

Just because Tiger Woods will be staying home to watch the 111th U.S. Open doesn’t mean his caddie will have the week off.  It appears that Steve Williams, Tiger’s longtime caddie, will be pairing up with friend Adam Scott as Scott tries to win his first major.

According to Mark Steinberg, Tiger’s agent, Williams will work for Scott during the Open.  “Adam and Steve are friends and have been good friends for a while, and Adam asked Steve if he would help him out,” said Steinberg, “Steve then called Tiger. Like any athlete or competitor, Steve doesn’t want to miss a major, either.”

Now, many may try and read more into this than just a friend helping out a friend and maybe take it as another blow to the never ending decline of the former world number one, but until I see Tiger tee it up with someone else other than “Stevie” I’ll take it to be just that: a golfer needing a caddie and a good caddie looking to work the biggest tournament of the year.  It’s a friend helping a friend.

It could be a very interesting week for Scott and Williams if they find themselves near the lead on Sunday evening.  Williams has been there plenty of times before with Woods, Greg Norman and Ray Floyd.  Scott could do a lot worse than having a guy like Williams on his bag.

One thing is for sure: it another strange episode in the never ending Tiger Woods Saga.
