A Super Sunday for Golf

by Jeff Skinnerrory bmw 2014

There’s no other way to say it. What a Sunday in golf! Golf fans were treated to a Sunday like few others as tournament after tournament came down to the wire with exciting finishes by popular players.

It was still early in the day here in the states when the boys of the European Tour made their way around a soggy Wentworth Club for their premier event the BMW PGA Championship. It looked like a great story as Thomas Bjorn was poised to win his 16th Euro Tour event.

He started the day with a five shot lead but struggled to an opening nine 39 which included a triple bogey seven at the sixth. That opened the door for all comers and come they did.

Shane Lowery, Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy challenged each other for the title with McIlroy coming out of the pack to claim a very unlikely victory. He was six shots off the lead at the start and wasn’t in the lead until his birdie on seventeen.

To think this was the same Rory who sat in the media center earlier this week lamenting his recent break up. It’s funny how things play out sometimes and this has to ease Rory’s pain…at least a little.

Monty’s winning final round 65 was matched by 64 year old Tom Watson who finished in second but it was an historic day for Monty. This is his first official win ever in the United States. It’s his first senior win and his first major, senior or otherwise. Monty played well today and the new “relaxed” Monty is actually fun to watch.

The ladies of the LPGA weren’t to be left out of this Memorial Day weekend party. The action was fast and furious at the Airbus LPGA Classic in Alabama with a bunch of players vying for the lead.  Jessica Korda airbus

Anna Nordqvist started the day with the lead but came under attack from a slew of players that were going low. Michelle Wie and Charley Hull carded 67’s and were in the mix all afternoon. Jessica Korda’s 65 was just enough to finish off Nordqvist who valiantly bounced back with four birds on her back nine.

But Korda topped that run with an amazing six birdies for a back nine 30 including a clinching bird on the 18th.

It’s Korda’s second win of the season and continues a great run for the Americans in 2014 and it was another wonderful week for Mike Whan’s LPGA.

Golf’s exciting Sunday continued down in Texas at Colonial at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. Playing for the first time as world number one, Adam Scott managed to work his way through a dozen golfers within two shots of the lead and claim his first win as the number one golfer in the world.

adam scott colonialScott’s 66 matched Jason Dufner’s and the two ended the day tied at nine under and faced off in a playoff. The two started the day behind a group of four golfers all tied for the lead. But only Duf and Scotty were left standing in Hogan’s Alley at the end of regulation.

Matching pars on the first playoff hole and exciting birdies on the second kept the thrill going until Scott ended it with his seven foot birdie putt on the third extra hole.

Scott has had a solid but unspectacular season so far in 2014. He had three top tens and a blown win at the Arnold Palmer going into this week. Maybe this will be the spark that ignites his season.

It certainly was an exciting end to a marvelous day of golf. Days like today are a golf fan’s dream.
