Surprises at Pinehurst

by Jeff Skinner

There were two big surprises yesterday at the U.S. Open.  First of all everyone, including the USGA thought there would be some rain on Pinehurst No.2 over the past twenty four hours.  I was on Pinehurst’s neighboring course, Whispering Pines, on Wednesday evening and we got soaked by an intense storm.  Ten minutes down the road, in Pinehurst they stayed bone dry.  Thursday’s forecast called for some afternoon thunderstorms but nothing ever materialized.

Mike Davis said today that with that forecast they elected to not water the course on Wednesday and with all the heat, sun and wind on Thursday the course was a little faster than the USGA expected.  Fortunately, nothing got out of control and I would venture that there was some watering going on before Friday’s round tees off.

The other big surprise was Darren Clarke.  No…it wasn’t his five over par score that got my attention it was is waistline.  Now, Darren had dropped some pounds before but seeing him today was shocking.  He has lost some serious weight.  And his tailor must love him because he was rocking some finely tailored (tight) pants.  He looked great.  Now, if he could make some more birdies.
