us open logo 14Matthew Fitzpatrick finished his amateur career in style today as he carded a one under par 69 to finish as low amateur at the 114th U.S. Open. He finished eleven over par and bettered many players both professional and amateur.

Fitzpatrick won the 2013 U.S. Amateur at The Country Club last summer and had announced this is his last tournament as an amateur.

He entered rarified air with this finish as he became the first amateur since Bobby Jones in 1930 to earn low am at both the U.S. and British Opens.

It has been an interesting week for the 19 tear old.

“I really enjoyed it. It’s been a great week. My aim was to win the low amateur, and to achieve it is pretty pleasing. I think playing with some of the biggest names — I played with Phil and Justin, a practice round with Rory, playing with Louis on the last day, and, yeah, it’s been great and I really enjoyed my week, really.”

Fitzpatrick’s next stop is the Irish Open as he starts his professional career. His last week as an amateur was a very memorable one.
