Koepka Tops Poulter in Turkey

brooks k turkeyBrooks Koepka is a name that we have been hearing for some time now. The 24 year old Florida State grad seemed to be everywhere lately. And maybe that’s because he has been everywhere…at least when it comes to playing golf.

Koepka chose the road less travelled and played on the European Tour instead of taking the traditional route to try and play the U.S. PGA Tour. His plan worked.

With his win at the Turkish Airlines Open we are bound to see plenty more of him. Get used to hearing his name.

Koepka played excellent golf in the final round carding a seven under, bogey free 65 to outlast a spirited charge from Ian Poulter.  poulter turkey

Poulter had a six shot lead in the second round before a disastrous 75 on Saturday let everyone back in the tournament.

As it was, Poulter still had a chance to force a playoff on the 72nd hole but his five foot birdie putt slid by the hole.

Koepka has travelled an estimated 53,000 miles the past year to play golf all over the world and has done a wonderful job at it.

Last year on the PGA Tour in 16 starts he made 12 cuts, had two top tens, made over one million dollars and introduced himself at Pinehurst with a T4 at the U.S. Open.

So far this season on the PGA he has a T8 and a T4 in two starts.

The European Tour season has been even better for Koepka as he had three top tens and with this win cashes a check for $1.16 million.

And he isn’t done yet. He’ll tee it up in at the Race to Dubai Championship next week.

With him moving to 35th in the World Rankings he is guaranteed entry into any tournament he wishes but that doesn’t mean he’ll be forsaking the European Tour.

“The plan is to play both,” he said staying true to his Euro Tour roots.

“The goal was to be in the top 50 by the end of the year to be in all the majors, all the World Golf Championship events…and play both tours. I don’t see a reason why I can’t do it.”

He’s right. There is no reason why he can’t. And with all that cash maybe he can upgrade to first class.
