New Format Marks WGC-Cadillac Match Play

wgc match playTomorrow marks a new era in the PGA Tour’s Match Play legacy when the WGC-Cadillac Match Play begins at Harding Park in San Frisco.

After years of dealing with many big names losing early and therefore being left with some not so household names for the weekend the format has been restructured to insure that all players get at least three rounds of golf.

The 64 golfers are broken down into sixteen different groups of four players. Each will play every golfer in their group with the winners of each group advancing to a standard match play, single elimination format beginning on Saturday.

There are some seriously hard groups and plenty that will be fun to watch.

Rory McIlroy pairs with Billy Horschel, Brandt Snedeker and Jason Dufner. Jordan Spieth has to go through Lee Westwood, Matt Every and Mikko Ilonen. Any one of those golfers could win this thing. So much for the top golfers having any advantage in the draw. And if you think Ilonen is a weak link here, after all he got in the field when Phil Mickelson withdrew, think again. Last year he won the European Tour’s Volvo World Match Play so he’s got that going for him.

Take a look at the field and the groupings below. I could make a case for every one of these players to make it to Sunday. It should be a great week in Frisco.

And click here for the Dell Bracket Challenge. It’s not March Madness but it will do.
