The 2015 Memorial Honorees

Jack Nicklaus and his beloved Memorial Tournament is one of the special weeks on the PGA Tour. Nicklaus has taken great measures to set his tournament apart from the weekly tour stops.

Each year Nicklaus and the Memorial honors a person that has contributed to the game and also honors a journalist who has made an impact on golf journalism.

This year they have chosen Nick Faldo as their honoree.

Between 1987 and 1995 Faldo won three British Opens and three Masters Tournaments. While winning 39 tournaments around the world, including six events on the PGA TOUR, Faldo’s focus was on the major championships. In one stretch between 1988 and 1993, Faldo was never out of the top 20 in a Grand Slam event.

Faldo relied on dedication, consistency, tempo and one of the strongest competitive minds in the game. Consistency, distance control and course management were his strengths.

For their Journalism Award they selected Doc Giffin, Arnold Palmer’s man who has been his personal aide for over 50 years.

Born Nov. 18, 1928 in Crafton, Pa., Giffin began his journalism career as sports editor of The Pitt News at the University of Pittsburgh. He later became its editor. After graduating in 1950, he was briefly employed by United Press before being drafted into the Army during the Korean War.

After two years of military service, Giffin was hired at the now-defunct Pittsburgh Press, where he worked for nine years, including seven in the sports department. In 1962, he went to work as press secretary on the field staff of the PGA’s tournament division, but four years later he accepted an offer from Palmer to become his personal assistant, a job he holds to this day.
