Tiger’s Struggles Continue

There was plenty of history made in the sports world yesterday.

American Pharoah delighted millions of race fans with his victory in the Belmont Stakes ending a 37 year old Triple Crown drought. An historic moment it truly was.

A few hours earlier Tiger Woods stumbled and staggered to a most painful 85 at The Memorial. It is Woods highest score as a professional and marks the lowest of low points in his on course career.  tw mem

It is not the sort of history Woods is accustomed to being a part off.

For the first two rounds Woods was able to MacGyver his way to making the cut when his game really wasn’t up to it. Being around for the weekend was a testament to his will and some quality putting.

But making the cut may have been a curse rather than a blessing.

There was no part of Woods’ game that even came close to the level of even a journeymen professional on Saturday, no less a fourteen time major champion.

It went from bad to worse to horrid to painful and a front nine 42 gave way to 43 which finished with a quadruple bogey eight on the par four eighteenth.

All this on a course where his career scoring average is 69.95 and he has won five titles.

Woods was making history of the wrong kind.

He declined to be interviewed after his round and that is understandable. What could he possibly say about “processes” and “working through it” and “progress.”

It’s all rhetoric and the fact is his game is worse than ever. And no coach or method or practice session can seem the straighten him out.

Many players say one of the aspects of golf that drew them to the game was the fact that it’s a solo sport. No team or teammates just one player and one player’s game.

Today at 8:10am for the first time in his career Tiger Woods will tee off as a single in the final round of The Memorial.

He’s never been so alone.
