Friday’s Chip Shots

Brooks Koepka paired a second round 67 to go with his opening round 64 to take a one shot lead over youngster Austin Cook who is in just his third PGA Tour event. Koepka isn’t hitting a lot of fairways (13/28) at The FedEx St. Jude Classic but his iron play has been stellar hitting 78% of his Greens in Regulation. Personally, I hope Brooks isn’t peaking too early as I already have him slated as my Dark Horse pick for the U.S. Open.

Speaking of the Open, Phil Mickelson whose A-Game should translate well to Chambers Bay (if he has it) was happy with his performance today that left him six shots off the lead. His putting seems to be coming around but he burned so many edges today that kept him from going lower.

Meanwhile on the major scene, Sei Young Kim holds a one shot lead over Inbee Park at the KMPG Women’s PGA Championship and a slew of top golfers are just a few strokes back. Karrie Webb, Suzann Pettersen, Brooke Henderson and Stacy Lewis will be charging at Kim on Saturday. Lewis has found her form after a missed cut last week but world number one, Lydia Ko has missed her first cut on the LPGA Tour. It marks the first time Ko has had the weekend off in 56 straight LPGA starts. I bet she’ll be spending some time in NYC maybe that was her plan.

At the Constellation Senior PLAYERS Championship Bernhard Langer is back to his old ways and leads by four strokes. The 23 time Champions Tour winner has had a bit of a dry spell this season going nine events without a win. Considering he had five wins in 2014 we can officially call this a drought. He is looking to put an end to this streak and claim his fifth senior major.
