Big Names, Big Misses at the U.S. Open

After Thursday’s 80 Tiger Woods surprised no one by missing the cut today. He second round 76 was only slightly better and he had played himself out of the Open on day one. However, while many have given up on Woods he hasn’t wavered in his commitment to his fourth round of swing changes. “On a golf course like this, you get exposed,” Woods said. “You have to be precise and dialed in. And obviously I didn’t have that. Obviously I need to get a little better for the British Open.”

His remedy for improvement: “Just continue practicing, continue working on it. And hopefully it will be a little bit better.” A little bit? Are you kidding me? Sixteen over par requires more than a little bit better. But I do appreciate his optimism.  tiger rickie open

The most shocking of the big names to miss the cut (Tiger never had a real chance) has to be Rickie Fowler. With his dramatic PLAYERS win Fowler had been touted as finally living up to all that potential. This was his first major after that win and was favored to contend at Chambers Bay. Then he gets into a shootout of the strangest kind with Tiger Woods, shoots 81-73 and finishes +14 for the Open.

Forget all that talk about another “Big Three” for now.

Jimmy Walker disappointed with a back nine of four over par 40 to miss the cut. Starting on the back nine today he was in good shape and plus one for the championship when he made the turn to the front. He even managed to get back to even par when he birdied the first hole. Then the wheels fell off. They fell off and rolled down the massive dunes of Chambers Bay and got hit by that darn train.

He played his last seven holes in five over par including a disastrous double bogey five on his last hole the long downhill par three ninth. It was a lousy way to exit the Open.

Another Golf Boy melted in the Pacific Northwest sun on Friday as two time Masters Champion Bubba Watson couldn’t figure out Chambers Bay today. Shooting 70 on day one left Bubba in great position but the mercurial Watson blew up on Friday with a painful 7 over 77. Nine bogeys to two birdies and he’s out of town.
