Jordan Spieth Misses Cut…Stuff Happens

The sky is not falling. The world isn’t coming an end. Jordan Spieth just missed a cut. Spieth struggled to an opening round 74 at The Barclays and couldn’t get on track with a 73 today. Stuff happens.

And it is not like it was even close. Spieth went out in a blaze of glory, five shots off the cut line and to add insult to injury he incurred a penalty on the twelfth when he stepped on his own ball while searching for it in a hazard. Stuff happens.Spieth barclays rn2

These two rounds were his worst start since he missed the cut at The PLAYERS Championship and his third missed cut of the season. Stuff happens.

Oh, and in his debut as world number one he lost his title as Rory McIlroy regained the top spot by not playing. It’s complicated. Stuff happens.

I don’ think it’s the end of the world nor is it the end of the new “Big Three.” Or will it curtail the chatter of Spieth’s rivalry with Rory or Jason Day. Rory sat out the first week of the playoffs. Day tweaked his back on Tuesday. Spieth missed a cut. Stuff happens.

Pick whatever excuse you want: Spieth is burnt out after a pressure packed season. He was bound to slip a bit from such a high perch. Or maybe it’s his upgrade to new Titleist irons that had him missing greens. Stuff happens.

But after his last missed cut Spieth put together this record: T2, T30, T3, won the U.S. Open, won the John Deere, T4 at the Open, T10 and second at the PGA.  And he already had The Masters and the Valspar in his pocket.  Stuff really happens.

And let’s not forget the motivation Spieth gets from his “failures”. He botched the final round at the 2014 Masters only to come back this year and right that wrong with a win. Stuff happens.

If we learned anything from this young man it is that he is one determined competitor. He’s already working on his plan for next week at the Deutsche Bank. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Spieth pulls out a win there and maybe goes on to win the FedEx Cup too. Nothing this kid does surprises me.

It is just that sometimes stuff happens.
