Nice Toss Sergio

Sergio Garcia’s year long trip on cloud nine is officially over. Even after his embarrassing 13 on the fifteenth at The Masters which caused him to miss the cut he still had enough good will built up to enjoy the weekend. Not so much anymore.

Sergio flashed back to his youthful days when his temper was his worst enemy today at the Valero Texas Open. Struggling lately, he decided to be aggressive on the short, par 4 fifth hole. Out came the driver in hopes of driving the green. After he pulled it left, out came the driver again…. but this time it was tossed into the woods by the fiery Spaniard.

He did make a pretty good toss as he whipped it down into the scrub woods. To add insult to injury he shanked his chip and went on to bogey one of the real birdie holes on the course.

But I do give him a little credit for climbing down and retrieving his club himself and not ordering his caddie to fetch it for him.

Perhaps he missed an important tip from the immortal Hall of Famer Terrible Tommy Bolt who won the 1958 U.S. Open. Known for breaking and throwing more than his share of clubs he knew how to keep the damage to a minimum.

Always throw your clubs ahead of you. That way you don’t have to waste energy going back to pick them up.”

Wise words Sergio should consider.
