Weekend Happenings in Golf & More

Coming into the week all the talk was about the “Walk Up Music” that was making its debut at the Zurich Classic. Well, am I the only one that thought it was disappointing? It was boring and awkward as players stood there waiting for a few bars of their song to play out…. BORING! True walk up music, World Wrestling style is blared at ear shattering levels as the wrestler runs down the runway flexing and pumping up the crowd. If you’re going to go WWE style do it right. Maybe next year.

If the PGA Tour added alligators to their attendance numbers at the Zurich Classic they would have set a new tournament attendance record. My god, they were everywhere. One of our new favorite players, Taylor Gooch had the encounter of the alligator kind on Thursday when a feisty gator refused to move as The Gooch’s ball sat nearby. He was eventually given a free drop away from the gator and that gator showed who is the boss as he stood his ground and even chomped down on a rake that they threw at him.

Billy Horschel and Scott Piercy eventually held off the gators and the rest of the field to take home the tag team championship at the Zurich Classic. Some criticized the tour for swapping the format this year to finish with alternate shot versus better ball as they did last year. Better ball provides more birdies and some think more excitement. But with each player hitting every other shot there is no room for any error and each and every stoke is critical. It makes for a different kind of round and I thought it was great.

One of the highlights of the week was watching Henrik Stenson egg on his partner, Justin Rose to strip down to his boxer/briefs to play out of the water. Props to Rosey as alligators were probably sizing him up as he played his shot.

Low-light of the week at New Orleans had to be Jordan Spieth and partner Ryan Palmer blowing it on Friday. Well within the cut number the two of them threw up on themselves as they double bogeyed seventeen and eighteen as Spieth plopped two shots in the water. They missed the cut by a stroke. How bad is that!

Lydia Ko proved to herself and the golf world that she still has it despite the myriad of changes she has made to her game and team recently. She’s just turned 21 and has 15 LPGA wins, 11 world wide wins, two majors and the world at her feet. The LPGA is in fine shape.

Finally, the much anticipated NFL Draft took place over the weekend and I was busy switching between all the golf, Yankees, hockey playoffs and the draft. It was a great weekend for sports. And hopefully for my ever disappointing New York Jets. A year ago Sam Darnold was the hands down top quarterback in the draft but the Jets had little chance of drafting him. Things changed with the rise of Baker Mayfield and thanks to the Giants sticking with Eli Manning, Darnold fell to the Jets. We’ll see if Sam can finally be the man to fill Joe Namath’s white shoes. It’s a big ask but at least there’s some hope for the J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets now.
