Mickelson Should Be DQ’d

Phil Mickelson has a history of trying to show that he’s the smartest guy in the room. And he likes to think that he’s an “outside the box” thinker as the KMPG logo on his hat phil putt shinnecockdemonstrates.

But what he did on Saturday on the thirteenth green is inexcusable, even for the likable Mickelson. Hitting his ball as it was about to roll off the green to save himself from another awkward shot was not only a rules violation it was disgraceful. Was Phil frustrated that another Open was lost? Was he upset with the USGA’s set-up? Was he ready to say f**k it and pack it in? Maybe a little of all of that but he went way over the line.

And then he tries to double talk himself out of looking bad and didn’t mean to offend anyone. He sounded like Rudy Giuliani blowing smoke. It was disgraceful and disgusting. And if the USGA had any balls they would disqualify him.

But, they hide behind a rules interpretation that says all they could do is issue a two shot penalty. Bull.

The “committee” being the USGA, has the power to DQ any golfer under rule 33-7. If disrespecting his fellow players, the U.S. Open, the USGA and the game by purposely breaking a rule to benefit himself doesn’t warrant a DQ then I don’t know what does.

Going into this Open I was a huge Phil fan but add this to his other missteps like his gambling, insider trading, stock manipulation, public take-down of Tom Watson and him being a huge self-important wise ass…I may have had enough of Phil.

It’s not all about you Phil. Grow up.

  1. You hit the nail on the head, Jeff. Phil acts like he’s bigger than the game. He disgraced himself on #13 green yesterday and compounded that error with his lame excuses afterwards.
