Miguel, Aryia & DJ Win the Weekend

Sunday was a great day for golf fans as we were treated to early morning links golf from The Old Course at St. Andrews, the women walking the links at Gullane for the Ladies Scottish Open and wrapped up the day with the wonder that is Dustin Johnson claiming his third win of the season.

I was glued to the screen early on as Miguel Angel Jimenez held on to win the Senior Open Championship as Bernhard Langer and Kirk Triplet failed to close the gap on the colorful Spaniard. Miguel continued his solid ball striking and stretched his lead to three shots with a birdie at the twelfth hole. But his first bogey of the day at fifteen gave hope to Langer.maj senior open kiss

Langer had hurt his chances with a three putt bogey at the thirteenth and seemed to gather some steam with a bird at the fifteenth but pars to the house left him one shy of Jimenez and the Coolest Guy in Golf walked off with his second major of the season.

He was excited to be at St. Andrews and was honored to win where his idol and countryman, Seve Ballesteros had won, ”This is the place where everyone wants to win and the place where Seve won his second British Open,” Jimenez said. ”It has always been my ambition to win here. It feels like I am part of history.”

Shortly after Miguel was lighting his victory cigar, across the Firth of Fourth Ariya Jutanugarn was winning her own links championship at The Ladies Scottish Open. Jutanugarn shot an artful five under 66 to top Minjee Lee by one shot.

Aryia started the day with a one shot lead and Lee did her best to try and track her down but a bogey free 66 left her where she started…one shot behind.Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open - Day Four

Aryia appreciates links golf and wanted to add a links course win to her resume. ”It means a lot to me, it’s like my dream come true. I told my caddie this week, ‘I want to win on a links course one time in my life,’ and I did it so (I feel) pretty good.”

Dustin Johnson started the day tied for first with three other golfers at the RBC Canadian Open. He started with two birdies and then blew them away. Seven birds and a lone bogey later his 66 gave him his third win this season and nineteenth overall PGA Tour win.

DJ has won at least once each season since he started on tour in 2008 and bounced back from last dj rbcweek’s missed cut at The Open Championship. DJ was happy to win at Glen Abbey and thinks his Gretsky family ties had many Canadians cheering for him all week,”It means a lot, it’s the last time the RBC is going to be here at Glen Abbey. It’s a golf course I really like, I play well at it. So, it definitely means a lot to win here, got a lot of fans out here thanks to Wayne [Gretzky] and the family. It was a great week.”

It was a great week..but that Glen Abbey course wasn’t brown enough for me. Give me those tanned, links of Scotland anytime.

  1. Lot’s of great action on two links courses this weekend. The ladies were at Gullane ( pronounced gullin by most Scots, as we learned on our recent trip to Scotland. Mother Nature was the story at The Old Course in early play Sunday and the late play on Saturday afternoon. It was great to see the pro’s hitting shots from spotswe played from a couple of weeks ago. And although we had some breeze to contend with at times I’m glad we didn’t play in those 25to 35 mph winds!
