Trump’s Greens Fee Just Like Him…Too Much To Take

The leaderboard at the WGC- Cadillac Championship is indeed a stellar one. Popular players like leader Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson are only separated by a handful of strokes. It looks like another dramatic weekend is on deck and certainly worth watching.

So I tuned in early for the Saturday Morning Drive to watch the Golf Channel crew give me some inside info. And I got more than I asked for.doral city

As Morning Drive hosts Gary Williams and Charlie Rymer were reporting from Doral the constant sound of jets taking off from nearby Miami International Airport was drowning them out. They even made a few jokes about the annoying interruptions.

So let me see if I get this. Trump National Doral, one of greatest courses in the world according to its namesake owner, sits in the takeoff pattern of a major airport. Really?

So for its $450 greens fee plus mandatory $25 forecaddie and suggested tip of $20 you also get to enjoy and the ear shattering noise of 757’s screaming overhead. Oh, and don’t forget we get the wonderful views of all the real estate that circle Trump’s courses, not to mention all the high-rises that surrounds Doral.

Are you kidding me? $495 is the same price as Pebble Beach and there is slightly less panache down there in Miami.

If I was ever to fork over that kind of cash for one round and believe me the Scot in me probably will never let me, I’d have to be at Pebble with Jack Nicklaus driving my cart, Jordan Spieth reading my greens and Lexi Thompson pouring my Guinness. You get the idea.

I am sure Trump Doral offers a nice experience for its guests but real estate developments, jets strafing the course, hotels sprouting from the rough and Trump’s over priced greens fees aren’t for me.

I guess I have a different perspective of what golf should be…thank God.
