Jordan Cards an Albatross

Speaking of match play….

My brothers, Greek and biological spent the day on the course yesterday and partook of a bit of match play ourselves.

The format was two man teams and while the Greek and I, aka The Graybeards, lost to the team of G. and Jordan “Spieth” Menzies, aka The DB’s, we were treated to that rarest of golfing feats…the albatross.

Jordan, who is much younger, far longer and at least a dozen strokes better than any of us made the shot of the day, heck of the year on the slightly up hill par 5 fourth hole at Wintonbury Hills Golf Course in Bloomfield , CT.

After cracking a massive drive on the 512 yard hole he had 217 yards in and for his second shot pumped his hybrid dead at the pin. As the green sits down a bit over the rise in the fairway the bottom of the flag wasn’t visible so we couldn’t see it fall in the cup.

As we arrived on the green a ball sat pin high to the right and we thought it was his but it turned out to be mine, in three shots of course and we walked to the back of the green assuming he had rolled through the green.

When there was no ball in sight we turned to my brother and said to check the hole. Sure enough, it was there as my brother excitedly tried to convince us as we thought he was pulling our chain.

But there it was for a two…on a par five…the rarest of golf shots…the double eagle, the albatross.

It wasn’t the “shot heard ’round the world” but it certainly was heard round the course as we hooted, hollered and slapped some major high fives.

We all celebrated with a cold beverage afterwards and while The Greek and I got smoked the pain was slightly lessened by the fact we had seen such a great shot.

It was the first time I had witnessed an albatross but get this: it’s Jordan’s second. Yes, this youngster had already carded another on his former home course in Canada.

So he’s got that going for him.

  1. Two great shots for an unbelievable result! You gents wouldn’t believe me when I said “It’s in the hole “. Jordan was a tired boy by the end of the round after carrying my sad game around all day. Great shot, great round, Partner. I know how to pick’em.
