Thoughts On a Strange Weekend

It was an odd weekend for those of us that like to watch the best golfers in the world on television. The LPGA finished on Saturday night here on the east coast, as they normally do at The Lotte Championship but just before that the PGA Champions finished their tournament early due to incoming bad weather. So odd to have two Saturday finishes.

And then on to Sunday with the PGA Tour down at Hilton Head and the RBC Heritage. I was a bit perturbed by the coverage…or lack of coverage actually by the PGA Tour. I understand that the tee times were moved up to avoid the torrential rains that were forecast but was disappointed with no live on-line coverage. I paid to join the “PGA Tour Live” so I can watch early round coverage before the telecasts on my computer or phone. So when I saw that the players were out early I expected to fire that up and watch some action. But it was not to be, there was no coverage. That sucks, plain and simple. And watching a recorded telecast of a finish where I already knew the outcome sucks even more. Bad move PGA Tour.

Be that as it may, watching Si Woo Kim play Happy Gilmore with his putter as he slap-shotted his way over the greens of Harbour Town sucked even more. Missing what looked like every putt he faced, including four inside ten feet, he let Satoshi Kodaira beat him in the playoff for his first career PGA Tour win.

kodairaI was hoping Ian Poulter could keep up his fine play of late but it was obvious he had just run out of gas. It’s great to see Poults back in the groove. And he is dressing so conservatively now, gone are the loud colors and bright plaids of days gone by.

Brooke Henderson played like a champ down the stretch at Ko Olina and the Lotte Championship. Driver off the deck is en vogue on the LPGA now and she crushed one on Saturday. This is a face we will be seeing a lot of on the LPGA Tour. She’s twenty, has six LPGA wins including a major and is only getting better.spieth kaufman wedding

The boys are back at it. Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler and Smylie Kaufman are reviving their spring break adventures, with a twist. This time they are all together, with a bunch of their buds celebrating Kaufman’s wedding. Oh boy, I hope he has an understanding wife.

With all due respect to Masters winner Patrick Reed and the rest of the boys on the PGA Tour, John Rahm may be the hottest thing in golf. He may not be the hottest player, but he’s close. His win at the Open de Espana has him on cloud nine as he follows in the footsteps of his idols Seve and Sergio. Rahm is a great player with a magnetic personality that has enabled him to become a very popular player, not just in the states but world wide. He’s big, handsome, hits it a ton and so very emotional. Sometimes his temper gets the better of him as he’s been known to smash a club, kick a bag or let loose with an expletive or two but it’s that passion that draws us to him. He has five world wide wins in the last twenty-two months and his best major performance at this past Masters. He is learning how to win and very quickly has become a force on the PGA Tour.
