Changing It Up In New Orleans

Believe it or not things can get pretty boring on the PGA Tour. Week after week of 72 hole Zurich_Classictournaments broken up by the excitement of the four majors and a few compelling WGC’s can quickly become stale. Especially when Sunday afternoon comes down to bunch of faceless names hacking it around.

In an effort to spice things up the European Tour is at the forefront of changing their weekly formats to try and attract more fans to their game. The PGA Tour is late to the party when it comes to mixing things up but this week at the Zurich Classic things are about to change.

The Two-Man Team format at the Zurich is a welcomed change to the tour. Team play is cherished by the players and fans alike as the Ryder and Presidents Cups captivate the golf world each year. And it is truly a Ryder Cup event as they will play best ball (four-ball) in rounds one and three and rounds two and four will be the exciting and pressure filled alternate shot (foursomes).

That’s a great way to mix things up. Team play is what a lot of us play and is certainly what many of us want to see more of. And each member of the winning team takes home over a million bucks, not bad.

Another way the PGA Tour is adding some show business to the Zurich (and stealing a page from the WWE) is that each team has chosen their own “Walk Up Music” which will be played as they walk up to the first tee.

And the selections by the teams are varied and somewhat shocking. There is a lot less country than I thought there would be, a ton of head banging metal and plenty of hip hop. It’s an odd mix for what mostly appears to be a bunch of rich, one-per centers who spend their lives hopping from country club to private club to gated community.

It’s a diverse group of artists and genres and props to Harold Varner III and Robert Garrigus for their “Ebony and Ivory” pick, good one for sure. I like D.A. Points and Kyle Thompson’ s “Working for the Weekend” and cheers to Scots Russell Knox and Martin Laird, “Flower of Scotland.” But if I were them, “Scotland the Brave” would have been my choice. Slàinte!

Here’s a list of the teams and their songs that span the gamut from Toby Kieth to Drake to Metallica to Notorious BIG. Things are about to get jiggy on the PGA Tour in New Orleans.
