Delayed Wins All Around

Both the PGA and LPGA Tours spent plenty of time checking the weather over the weekend and both had to deal with long delays. But as both had hoped they were able to finish (almost) on time Sunday night and both tournaments gave us exciting finishes.

Aaron Wise broke through for his first win at the AT&T Byron Nelson and looked nothing like a twenty one year old rookie succumbing to the pressure. Wise was cool, calm and collected and aaron wiseneither the delay, Marc Leishman, Trinity Forest or anything else could rattle the former NCAA Individual Mens Champion.

Fairways and greens was his game plan and he executed it perfectly hitting every fairway and missing but one green in regulation. His six under par 65 got him to 23 under and gave him a three shot victory over Leishman who cooled off on Sunday and could only manage a 68.

Wise, the newest member of the ever growing class of ‘young guns’ was composed afterwards but certainly acknowledged the gravity of his win. With this win he pockets over a million, a two year PGA Tour exemption, entrance into The Masters and moves to 99 in the world. And now he can set his own work schedule on tour, not bad for a youngster.

It’s a dream come true to win this one,” said Wise, and how he dealt with the pressure, “Just a ton of self-belief. It was always there, but to do it on this stage, to know I’ve done it, really helped me today. I felt oddly calm all day long and to play as good as I did, bogey free, was awesome.”

The LPGA’s Kingsmill Championship was shortened to 54 holes due to rain, rain and more rain. But a win is a win and Ariya Jutanugarn was able to outlast In Gee Chun and Nasa Hataoka for her eighth LPGA victory. ariya

Starting two shots off the lead Jutanugarn posted a 66 to earn a place in the playoff with Chun and Hataoka. Chun was eliminated on the first playoff hole as she could only par and failed to match Jutanugarn and Hataoka with birdies. And when Jutanugarn topped Kataoka with another birdie, again on eighteen, the long wet, weekend was over and Jutanugarn was champion.

When asked about handling the pressure she said, “Actually, I feel it, I was just really excited about that. I did not feel that much pressure because I did a great job today. So whatever, I’m going to win or lose, I’m very proud of that.”
