U.S. Open Preview: Shinnecock Holes 13 & 14

The U.S Open is nearly upon us and here is a look at a drastically changed Shinnecock. Holes thirteen and fourteen are featured here with descriptions from the boys at the USGA.

Another hole that hasn’t changed appreciably since 2004 will offer a potential birdie opportunity, although it has the least generous fairway on the course – at 300 yards, it’s only 16½ yards wide. It’s critical for the player to get the ball into the fairway from the elevated tee to leave himself a short club into a green that features a lot of movement. The bunker at the front right of the green can snare an approach shot.

This hole has been lengthened by 77 yards, restoring it as the long par 4 it was designed to be. There is a dramatic drop in elevation from the teeing ground to the fairway, which pitches from right to left. The preferred angle of approach is from the left. A player who finds the rough could chase the ball onto the green through the narrow opening. The second shot plays slightly uphill to a green that pitches gently from back to front, with a runoff behind it.
